Presiding Bishop Attends Diocesan Convention

by admin on January 24, 2011

The Very Rev. Dr. Katherine Jefferts-Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, preached and celebrated Eucharist at St. John’s Cathedral to open the 168th Diocesan Convention of the Diocese of Florida. In her sermon she compared the body of Christ to our human bodies. The body is healthy when all the parts work in harmony and cooperate with each other, as God intends. As a scientist as well as a woman of great faith, Bishop Katherine is able to weave to concept of “One Body” into words we can understand. Antibodies and allergic reactions—sneezes for example—are our attempt to rid our bodies of what we perceive as a threat. We are called to bring healing to a hurting world: to moderate our “sneeze” over-reactions to those whom we perceive to be different from us in appearance, beliefs, or other distinguishing characteristics.
The Diocese of Florida is alive and well and actively engaged in ministry and mission!
All clergy of this Diocese and delegates from each parish in the Diocese as well as interested visitors were present. Those attending from St. Patrick’s were clergy Fr. Marty Pfab and Fr. Donald Dinwiddie, Lay Delegates Nancy Mauney and Linda McClelland, and intersted visitors Cathy Guevarra, Hugh McClelland and Jim Turk.

Christmas at St. Patrick’s was glorious!

Ready for Christmas at St. Patrick’s

Toasting marshmallows in the fire pit was great fun!

We’ve had a great time getting in the Christmas Spirit. We decorated the church, and then later went carolling in our neighborhood. After carolling we came back and had our first party at the Pavillion! It was a great time. When is the next party?

Blessing of the animals

Blessing of the Animals was a big hit on Oct. 3. Our furry parishoners were blessed by Father Marty and Father Bob. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this service special!

Bless the creatures great.....

... and small.

For they bring us comfort and joy!

Let’s look a little greener

St. Patrick’s has two large recycling bins for newspapers, magazines, catalogs, paper, and envelopes. Through this program, St. Patrick’s will receive cash for paper recyclables. Friends from your neighorhood can also place their paper in the bins. It’s a WIN-WIN for the environment, the community, and the Church. We also have a recycling bin for cans outside the side doors of the fellowship area.  We call this “Kans for Kids” and the money earned from recycling our aluminum cans will go toward children’s ministries. As it turns out, those soda cans are really adding up!

Planting for the hungry

Cathy Guevarra and Barbara Byers harvest collards for Feed My Lambs ministry

We now have four raised vegetable planting beds at St. Patrick’s.  Thanks to Cathy Guevarra with help from Fr. Marty for the work constructing and planting the beds, and to Mary Farr for the wonderful composted manure.  The collards are continuing to grow, and an early harvest last month already went to grateful Feed My Lambs families. We will continue to be able to provide fresh vegetables for our Feed My Lambs ministry.  This is another way we are working to be good stewards of what God has given us here at St. Patrick’s.  Speak to Cathy if you would like to help out with this worthwhile project.
